Facing reality: Game director shares struggles of creating a VR title

While his line of work brings the virtual into our world — this game director has not lost sight of reality.

Creating a Virtual Reality (VR) game is no walk in the park. It requires a lot of understanding of the product, Mixed Realms game director Chalit Noonchoo shared in an interview with AsiaOne for the second season of My Gamer Life.

Established in 2016, Mixed Realms is a Singapore-based indie game studio that has created notable VR titles such as Sairento and Hellsweeper VR.

But Sairento's success didn't come easy, Chalit explained.

"The reality is that the VR market is just so much smaller than the PC or mobile game market, so that means you need to be absolutely sure that the game can hit the right note, find the right audience — if you can find that niche, it will be a rewarding experience," he said.

"But if you can't, that might very well mean it's the last game you develop."

Chalit also described game development as a "marathon", adding that success isn't guaranteed.

"The important thing is that you have to be content and fulfilled with the decisions you make. If you find your work meaningful, I think that makes the day-to-day a lot more enjoyable," he said.

"It's as much about the journey as it is the destination."
