FiiO FT3 headphones sound over-engineered for the price

Often lauded for affordable, portable Hi-Fi gear, FiiO has added a new over-ear headphones to its lineup: the FiiO FT3. 

FiiO opted for an open-back design, which reduces unwanted vibrations and resonance and delivers a larger soundstage with improved clarity. The FT3 is crafted from lightweight aluminium alloy and features a hollow mesh design that significantly reduces weight and improves listening comfort without sacrificing durability.

The drivers are also angled parallel to the ears to mitigate high-frequency responses caused by waves hitting the ears, and a reflective tip at the rear of the headphones prevents unwanted soundwave interference.

It's all in the drivers

It also boasts a massive 60mm dynamic driver, a rarity in this class, which enables the FT3 to push more air more efficiently. These headphones can also handle higher output power, minimising distortion and producing bass frequencies that are deeper and richer. The FT3 also utilises a beryllium-plated gasket and a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) diaphragm to minimise weight and improve rigidity and sturdiness.

The gasket reduces distortion and improves the accuracy of sound reproduction, while the diaphragm extends the frequency response and improves the soundstage. The headphone also employs an ultra-fine Japanese copper-clad aluminium voice coil using high-purity Furukawa monocrystalline copper wire.

The N52 neodymium magnets are arranged in an optimised asymmetrical internal and external magnetic circuit system. The circuit balances the movement of the voice coil and diaphragm during audio playback and is most effective during dynamic changes in the music. According to FiiO, this results in a more controlled and accurate reproduction of the audio track.

Useful accessories

The FT3 comes packaged with four swappable audio plugs, including 3.5mm and 4.4mm connectors and adapters for 6.35mm and XLR-4 balanced connections. The package also includes two sets of ear pads-suede and protein leather. The suede ear pads offer a balanced sound with enhanced ambience, while the protein leather ear pads deliver a clear sound with a large soundstage and highly detailed audio reproduction.

FiiO FT3 retails for $479 and is available at AV One, Connect IT, Stereo Electronics, Sam Audio, TK Foto and TREOO.
