'A lot of sacrifices': Overwatch 2 content creator reflects on community efforts that kick-started tournament

The world could always use more heroes - and for the Overwatch scene in Singapore, this man is one of them.

Overwatch 2 content creator Muhammad Zul Iman, known online as "Crescent", was the one who spearheaded the creation of a collegiate-level tournament here in Singapore back in 2021, he shared in an interview with AsiaOne for the second season of My Gamer Life.

Overwatch 2 is a five-versus-five first-person shooter game by Blizzard Entertainment that sees players take control of various heroes in the game and duking it out with other players to fulfil in-game objectives.

While the game itself is still popular among the local crowd, there weren't many actual events held in real life, especially in Singapore.

Noticing that void, Iman had an idea: Why not hold a tournament at a live event for people in Singapore to take part in?

"Players could then come down physically to actually not only meet each other but also play on a stage, which was something ridiculous to think about back then," he said.

However, Iman was resolute on wanting to provide an experience for Overwatch fans in Singapore and went ahead with his endeavour.

"In order to get there, there were a lot of sacrifices that had to be made by me and my team," he recalled. "I was very blessed to work with some very passionate individuals as well who were there to stick through it all with me."

Rallying the small Overwatch community in Singapore, Iman and his team managed to turn that "small idea into reality", even earning the recognition of Blizzard.

He said with pride: "The producers of the game actually reached out to us because they were not only quite impressed, but also very heart-warmed to see that Overwatch was still thriving in Singapore."
