Aside from toilet paper, rice, hand sanitisers and, uh, McDonald’s condiments, another commodity that scalpers are upselling amid the pandemic is the sweet, sweet taste of Waffle Crisp breakfast cereal.
Deliciously sugary and laced with the scent of nostalgia and childhood, the Post Foods product has been generally considered one of the greatest breakfast cereals of all time. Apparently, it’s been officially discontinued in the United States, but here in Singapore, one can still find them stocked on the shelves of supermarkets and online grocers.
That is, until the coronavirus broke out. It seems like the viral outbreak has presented an opportunity for those who’d like to make some fat stacks over syrupy cereal — you just can’t find Waffle Crisp as easily anymore these days.
It’s been out of stock online as well in places like Karthika Supermarket, Shopee and Qoo10.
One place that certainly has Waffle Crisp cereal on lock is Carousell, where dealers have been making a killing. Over the past two weeks, listings of the product have popped up with sellers offering their stockpiled boxes at up to $25 a pop.
It’s been so popular that one seller from Teban Gardens claimed to have cleared 192 boxes of it in the span of six days.
To be fair, the $25 includes delivery so buyers don’t have to go out during the circuit breaker. But considering that Post’s Waffle Crisp usually retails for less than $6 in stores, it does make you question just how much you love it enough to dole out that amount of cash.
But we suppose if you’re enough of a Waffle Crisp fan, the price wouldn’t matter for a milky crunch of artificially sweetened wheat cubes.
