The Batman ignites with $338 million global box-office and second biggest opening during pandemic

The Batman swooped into theatres this weekend, earning US$128.5 million (S$175 million) in its domestic box office debut. The detective DC film starring Robert Pattinson as the brooding crime fighter has become the second-highest domestic opening of the pandemic era, behind Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Overseas, the film made US$120 million from 75 markets, increasing the film's overall tally to US$248.5 million. In Singapore, The Batman opened at number one and cumulated $1.5 million (approximately US$1 million).

The Batman is the biggest film to open in 2022 so far, and the biggest opening weekend for Warner Bros since Joker. It is also the studio's best pandemic era foreign debut. The film is also the best opening for filmmaker Matt Reeves since Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (US$104.3 million worldwide).

The PG-13 film centres on Bruce Wayne's earlier days of fighting crime and is a rogues' gallery of Batman characters. Paul Dano plays the Riddler, a serial killer pursued by Batman, while Zoë Kravitz plays Catwoman and Colin Farrell appears as the Penguin.

The Batman is now showing in cinemas. The movie has been well received by critics and earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences.
