'Don't learn my bad habit of perfectionism': Dad-to-be Desmond Tan on how he'd raise his daughter

Earlier this month, Desmond Tan announced that his wife is pregnant with their first child, a daughter.

Getting into the role of being a dad, the 37-year-old local actor shared his beliefs and values and what he aimed to impart to his daughter in an interview with local media 8world published today (Oct 24).

He shared that his views and principles wouldn't change even after the birth of his daughter, and that he valued "doing things from start to finish, being responsible and working hard".

He also shared the good things he wants his daughter and future kids to learn from him.

"I hope they will have the spirit to chase their dreams like I do, and do it boldly," he said. "I want them to work hard every day and be motivated."

When it came to the negatives, Desmond added: "Don't learn my bad habit of perfectionism, it will make you overthink and get exhausted."

He hoped that when his kids chase their dreams, they would also learn to strike a balance to relax and enjoy the process.

When it came to what he wants his future kids to get from his wife, Desmond jokingly said "beauty" before adding that he would want them to be "gentle, patient and calm" like their mum rather than only be "masculine" like him.

In 2021, Desmond married his university sweetheart in a castle wedding in France, and she has remained out of the public eye, with him only posting shots of her from the back or without her face visible.

While the public may be none the wiser to who she is, Desmond told AsiaOne in a previous interview that he introduced her to his colleagues while filming for his latest drama All That Glitters.

When they filmed in Thailand and Malaysia, his wife visited him for about five days at each location.

"It was nice to have her be included in part of the team because she also went out with the directors' and producers' spouses who came along," he said.

In All That Glitters, Desmond plays Liu Musen, a young man who was orphaned at an early age and becomes best friends with He Jianzhi (Ayden Sng) and Huang Jintiao (Jeremy Chan).

The story centres around how their friendship crumbles over the span of two decades as they turn from best friends to worst enemies in their pursuit of success and riches.

It also stars Chantalle Ng, Hong Ling, He Yingying, Chen Yixin, Zhang Zetong and Tyler Ten and airs on Channel 8 at 9pm on weekdays. It is also available now on demand for free on meWATCH.
