It was a surprise said to be two years in the making.

Beloved 2000s Taiwanese pop group F4 reunited on stage for the first time in over a decade, during the final night of Mandopop rock band Mayday's concert at the Taipei Dome on Saturday (July 12).

In multiples videos shared on social media, screams could be heard as soon as stars Jerry Yan, Vic Chou, Vanness Wu and Ken Chu took to the stage singing the theme song to Meteor Garden, a popular TV series based on the Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango.

All four singer-actors, now in their 40s, were propelled to fame following their roles in the Taiwanese series, which aired in 2001.

The show also starred the late Barbie Hsu, who died from influenza-related complications in February this year.

Watching their performance on stage, one probably couldn't help but feel a wave of nostalgia.

After all, the last time they performed together as a group was in 2013, according to reports.

But somehow, we also detected an air of solemness hanging over the group, especially during their post-performance introductions

It wasn't just us it seems, as several users left comments and sad emojis remembering Barbie, who played the lead protagonist Shancai in the show.

But there were lighter moments too, such as one clip which showed Vic, better known as Zai Zai, expressed that he was "very honoured" to be able to participate in Mayday's concert for the first time.

"The air up on stage feels fresher," the 44-year-old joked.

Vanness, 46, had earlier also thanked Ashin for pulling off the reunion, adding that he was at a loss for words.

When it came to Jerry, he too, expressed incredulity at being able to share a stage with Mayday. "It feels like a dream," he said. Mayday, formed in 1997, also includes Masa, Stone, Monster and Ming.

Just like the others, the 48-year-old also thanked Ashin for the effort, and "for the opportunity for us to relive our youth".

Ken, 46, added that he can "finally breathe a sigh of relief", "because I've been acting dumb".

"I had to tell everyone I didn't know about [the appearance] and that I don't know them (Mayday) well," Ken shared, to laughter from the audience.

It seemed Vic, too, had earlier feigned innocence to reporters' questions as to when F4 would reunite.

According to entertainment platform As One, Ashin reportedly said on stage that simply getting all four F4 members together was no mean feat and took two years to plan.

Little Tigers, S.H.E reunions next? Fans plead

Many netizens were just as elated by the surprise appearance, which left several of them in tears.

"It's really F4, unbelievable. What can't Mayday do?" wrote one.

Fans also began stating their wishes for the next dream reunion.

"Can it be Little Tigers next?" wrote one of several fans pining for the reunion of the late 80s boy band, which included Alec Su, Nicky Wu and Julian Chen.

"Could you put together S.H.E? Although it's not possible," wondered another. She girl group includes Selina Jen, Hebe Tien and Ella Chen.
