It seems monkey business is good for business - at least that seems to be the case for Game Science, the Chinese developer behind Black Myth: Wukong.

Black Myth: Wukong has taken home the Best Action Game award at The Game Awards in Los Angeles on Friday (Dec 13), beating out other notable titles. This annual event is frequently referred to as the Oscars of the gaming industry.

Other nominees include Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

The game also picked up the Players' Voice award.

Launched in August, Black Myth: Wukong follows the story of The Destined One, a monkey warrior from Mount Huaguo tasked with reviving Sun Wukong.

Along the way, he encounters many dangerous beasts - some human, many not - and must overcome them in adrenaline-pumping fast-paced combat.

Jiang Baicun, the game's designer, thanked the audience at The Game Awards, stating that he felt very honoured to have received the Best Action Game award.

"I want to thank all the gamers who have played this game - it is your support that has brought this game about courage, wisdom and eastern mythology into the limelight," Baicun said.

He also jokingly thanked The Game Awards for "not placing any invisible walls on my way up [the stairs to the stage]" - a reference to how much of the visible world of Black Myth: Wukong is restricted by invisible walls that players cannot get past.

"This award belongs to everyone on the team as well as the friends and family who have quietly supported us from behind the scenes," he added.

Baicun said that without them, he would still be at home testing game mechanics and making Erlang Shen - one of the iconic bosses in the game - stronger.

Baicun also stated that Black Myth: Wukong isn't a difficult game to play.

He said, grinning: "It's perfect for players new to action games - trust me on this."

The groundbreaking game took the global gaming market by storm when it was launched, reportedly selling over 10 million copies in just three days. It became the most successful video game ever produced in China.
