They've put time and effort into getting to where they are today - and they'll be putting more in to go further beyond.
But to the general public, these endeavours may not even be acknowledged, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) professional player Yeo "Diablo" Wee Lun said in an interview with AsiaOne for the second season of My Gamer Life.
MLBB is a five-versus-five Multi-player Online Battle Arena (MOBA) by Moonton Games where two teams go against each other to take over the opposing team's base and win the game.
Wee Lun plays for NIP Flash, local organisation that has found success and also partnered with Swedish esports organisation Ninjas in Pajamas.
"I don't think people understand the amount of effort that we, as esports athletes, put in to fortify our skills," he said.
"Because the amount of training that we do is no less than regular sports athletes - we train from morning till night and we do it consistently."
Aside from having the raw skills to even have skin in the game, players must also have the mental fortitude to be an esports athlete.
"Your mental needs to be strong because there are definitely times where you will lose," he explained. "But you cannot let that affect you."
They make sure to stick to a strict schedule to maintain the high level of skill required to stay competitive, Wee Lun also said.
He added: "I believe the hard work that we put in cannot be underestimated."
