The award-winning film Guang, by Malaysian filmmaker Quek Shio Chuan, saw its gala premiere hosted at The Cathay yesterday (March 7).

The gala premiere also heralded the launch of the 'Be Kind, Be Guang' campaign, where cinemagoers were encouraged to gift a Guang movie ticket to their friends or any member of the public to watch the movie for free at any Cathay Cineplexes outlet screening the movie.

People who purchase these vouchers are encouraged to pin them to the standees for anyone to take and the launch of the campaign saw over 260 tickets bought.

Guang is the debut feature film for Shio Chuan, which was adapted from the first short film he directed in 2011.

The story is based on his real-life experiences with his autistic brother. The short film went on to sweep multiple awards such as the Grand Prize at the BMW Shorties 2011 in Malaysia, plus Best Film awards from the 7th Leids Film Festival in the Netherlands, and 6th Festival Alto Vicentino in Italy.

The gala premiere saw the attendance of the cast - Kyo Chen who plays the titular lead, Wen Guang; Ernest Chong who plays his brother - and Shio Chuan himself.

There was also an exhibition to raise autism awareness with the groups Society Staples, Very Special Arts Singapore, Saint Andrews Autism Centre and Extraordinary People displaying the special crafts made by their beneficiaries and members.

The founder of social enterprise The Heart Enterprise, Joanne Leow, was also present and introduced a special music performance, inspired by the movie, that featured special needs individuals.

Guang will be screened at the following cinemas from March 14 onwards: All Cathay Cineplexes outlets, GV VivoCity, GV Tiong Bahru, GV Yishun and EagleWings Cinematics at King Albert Park.
