Constance Wu becomes first Asian-American actress to be nominated for Golden Globes in decades

Constance Wu has broken a 44-year dry spell by becoming the first Asian-American woman to be nominated for Best Lead Actress at the Golden Globes. 

The 36-year-old actress was nominated for her role Rachel Chu in summer hit movie Crazy Rich Asians. The movie also earned a nomination for Best Movie - musical or comedy. 

The nominations are "the proudest moment of his career," the film's director Jon M. Chu tweeted.

After the news broke, Wu shared how she was "ecstatic but also in shock" and later gave her thanks in an Instagram post.

According to CNN, the last time a person of Asian descent was nominated in Best Lead Actress was in 1974 when Yvonne Elliman was nominated for her role in 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. 

While Wu has to face four other actresses in the same category, she's overjoyed to have landed a nomination.

She shared, "I never dreamed a Best Actress nomination would happen because I've never seen it before...but it happened! Wow! Thank you all for your support of our movie!"
