Zack Snyder’s Justice League is shaping up to be one of the more interesting entries from Warner Bros.’ release slate in 2021. Recently, Zack Snyder himself revealed that the four-part miniseries coming to HBO Max may be getting an R-rating, as compared to the original’s PG-13 rating.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Snyder explained that the potential new rating is justified given how “insane and epic” the Snyder Cut, which amounts to a whopping four hours cumulatively, is in terms of content.

Certain heroes blurt out expletives and speak a lot more candidly, and violence of a more visceral nature is also assured.

“There’s one scene where Batman drops an F-bomb. Cyborg is not too happy with what’s going on with his life before he meets the Justice League, and he tends to speak his mind. And Steppenwolf is pretty much just hacking people in half. So [the rating would be due to] violence and profanity, probably both.”

The filmmaker concedes that he and Warner Bros. are still awaiting an official confirmation from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for the R-rating.

Interestingly, it appears that Zack Snyder’s Justice League may actually get a theatrical release alongside its debut on HBO Max. This will mirror the two-pronged approach that Warner Bros. is adopting for its entire 2021 slate of movies.

Despite Tenet director Christopher Nolan expressing his discontentment with this controversial approach to releasing feature films, Snyder, like Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins and Let Them All Talk director Steven Soderbergh, is supportive of the move.

“I’m a huge fan and a big supporter of the cinematic experience, and we’re already talking about Justice League playing theatrically at the same time it’s coming to HBO Max,” Snyder says. “So weirdly, it’s the reverse [of the trend],” Snyder explained to EW.

Currently, Warner Bros. has also yet to make an announcement on whether this potential push for Zack Snyder’s Justice League to be in theatres. In any case, eager fans can look forward to it when it premieres on HBO Max sometime in 2021.
