German restaurants in Singapore: Where to go for beer, bratwurst, and more bavarian classics

German restaurants in Singapore: Where to go for beer, bratwurst, and more bavarian classics

Ending the week with nothing to eat? That's the wurst.

Bad puns aside, we recommend sharing it with friends and family over ice cold beers and sinfully satisfying German food.

From the Capitol Kempinski's newly minted Frieda to Stew Küche in the Alexandra heartlands, we round up the best Bavarian cuisine Singapore has to offer.

BROTZEIT

With five restaurants across the island from Katong to Westgate, including the flagship outlet at VivoCity, Brotzeit is the undisputed first name in German grub and brews in Singapore.

Its lip-smacking menu offers options ranging from the hearty Smoked Chicken Cheese Sausage Tower served with Bavarian pretzels, to the comforting Bauernwurst (a flavourful farmhouse-style sausage paired with braised red cabbage and roasted potatoes), and even a virtuous yet delicious oven-roasted mackerel in the Steckerlfisch.

The firm favourite remains the stupendous Brotzeit Platter with Bavarian Pork Ribs, laden with a spread of authentic German sausage, crispy oven-roasted pork knuckle and honey ribs basted with the chef's special beer sauce.

Two words - come hungry!

Seeing as it's Christmas soon, Brotzeit kicks off the festive season with the traditional Gans'l Wochen, or Goose Week, a lavish homage to the favoured fowl of German cuisine across three sumptuous set menus, available in all outlets.

Brotzeit has five locations islandwide in Vivocity, Raffles City, 313@Somerset, Katong, and Westgate. More details here.

FRIEDA SINGAPORE

The Capitol Kempinski Hotel's Arcade is lined with a smorgasbord of restaurants like the newly-minted ristorante La Scala, diner Capitol Milk Bar, and rum bar The Bar at 15 Stamford.

There's also Frieda, a casual German restaurant, named after the daughter of hotel founder Berthold Kempinski.

The Day Bar is great for an after-work lager, while the Dining Room is a better option for a proper dinner.

Head Chef Jan Mulik's menu gets straight to the point with German classics like Oven Roasted Pork Knuckle ($39++).

Frieda is located at the Arcade@The Capitol Kempinski, #01-87/K1-K2, 15 Stamford Rd, Singapore 178906, p. +65 6715 6873.

Open Tue-Sun 11.30am-2.30pm, 6pm-10.30pm; Mon 12am-2.30pm, 6pm-10.30pm.

STUTTGART BLACKFOREST BOUTIQUE S-CAFÉ

With amazing Black Forest Cake ($14++ per 125g slice) and Speciality Sausages ($19.80++), the Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Café serves the best of Swabian cuisine and carefully selected wines imported from Stuttgart and the Black Forest region of Germany.

Love Jewish pierogis or Chinese xiao long bao? Try the German version, Maultaschen ($16.80++), which are essentially dumplings filled with minced meat.

Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Café is located at 9 Bras Basah Road #01-01 Rendezvous Hotel Gallery  Singapore 189559, p. +65 6336 8675.

Open daily, 11am-11pm.

STEW KÜCHE

Pronounced koo-shay (the German word for kitchen), Stew Küche sets its sights on the lunchtime crowd by settling down in a kopitiam at Bukit Merah, the one adjacent to Ikea and Queensway Shopping Centre.

Here you'll find pork knuckles at reasonable prices: available in either Full ($25) or Half Portion ($15), marinated and deep-fried to crispy perfection.

And things take a local twist with spicy pickled achar sides to complement the traditional sauerkraut dish.

Stew Küche is located at Alexandra Village Food Centre, 120 Bukit Merah Lane 1, Singapore 150123.

Opens Tues-Fri 11am-3pm and 5pm-10pm; Sat-Sun 11am-3pm and 5pm-11pm.

WILDER MANN

The perfect place to catch the latest football games, Wilder Mann is a wild card among the old shophouses along Upper Thomson Road.

They've got simple German fare like currywurst and schnitzels, which wash down nicely with Stiegl house beers - try the Stiegl Weisse and Stiegl Goldbrau lager (happy hours are from 9pm to 11pm).

Limited quantities of Pork Knuckles are available on Fridays and Sundays, too, so call in to reserve a portion the day before.

Wilder Mann is located in 906 Upper Thomson Rd, Singapore 787110, p. +65 9879 9544.

Opens Tue-Fri 6pm-11.45pm; Sat-Sun 6pm-12am.

WERNER'S OVEN

Nancy and Werner Hochbaum began their humble German bakery in 1988, on the ground floor of Parkway Builder's Centre.

Years later, Werner's Oven has moved to their shiny new premises in Joo Chiat, and expanded their menu to include the (now famous) German Sausages and Ox-Tail Stew.

Even though they now operate a full-scale German restaurant and bakery, and a bar serving famous German brews and a wine selection, the couple continues to keep the conventions of their Bavarian culinary and baking methods.

Perfect if you're looking for an authentic experience.

Werner's Oven is located at 49 Joo Chiat Place, Singapore 427773, p. +65 6442 3897.

Opens Tue-Sun 8.30am-10pm.

DEUTSCHLANDER

German restaurant Deutschlander specialises in Bavarian cuisine: Pretzels, beef goulash, "Munich style" Schnitzel ($26++), and their house-special Awesome Bavarian Beer Garden Spare Rib ($22++).

Gather your pals and explore their selection of Paulaner beers on draft for a perfect night out - there's everything from creamy caramel malt Munich Dunkel, to strong and dark Lager Dunkel to round off your hearty German feast.

Deutschlander is located at 3B River Valley Road, Clarke Quay Blk B, #01-12, Singapore 179021, p. +65 6338 0480.

Opens Sun-Tue 5pm-2am; Wed-Thu 5pm-3am; Fri-Sat 5pm-4am.
