Since 2005, the James Dyson Award has been on the lookout for innovative and entrepreneurial students and fresh graduates of engineering and design to invent a product that solves an issue.
Winners of the James Dyson Award will then be given cash prizes to not only help further their ideas but also give them a platform to help showcase their ideas to the world.
Aside from international winners which will walk away with a cash prize of $52,000, the Dyson Award 2020 is also on the lookout for the next Singapore National Winner, who will receive a cash prize of $5,200.
Last year, a group of students from the Singapore University of Technology and Design took home the title of Singapore National Winner for their invention, Wheelson.
It is a clever and versatile bicycle attachment that makes carrying heavy loads for cyclists safe and easy. Not only is it compatible with different types of bikes, it can also double up as a shopping cart when detached.
This year, aside from the two awards mentioned above, Dyson will also be on the lookout for its third winner, this time with a focus on sustainability. The Sustainability winner will also get to walk away with $52,000 for their invention.
"Each year we have been struck by the ingenuity and conscience of young people to solve really big problems. So many of the James Dyson Award entries have a focus on improving the world through engineering and technology," said James Dyson.
"Recognising the role that engineers and scientists play in creating a sustainable future, we have decided to introduce a second international prize focused on ideas which do more with less and tackle environmental or social issues."
Entries to participate in this year's James Dyson Award is now open, and will close on July 16, 2020. Interested applicants can enter through the online application form on the James Dyson Award website.
