Eight years after the launch of the Nintendo Switch, the Kyoto-based gaming company announced that its successor will be released sometime this year
According to a trailer released last Thursday (Jan 16) , the Switch 2 features a redesigned kickstand, a bigger screen as well as magnetic connectivity for the Joy-Con controllers.
Although there is no official release date for the device just yet, more details, including prices, are expected to be revealed at a Nintendo Direct event on April 2.
The original Switch, launched in 2017, was a huge success for the gaming company, following the poor performance of the Wii U console.
To date, more than 145 million Switch units have been sold, making it the third best selling console ever, only behind the Nintendo DS and the Playstation 2.

On the software front, Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible.
This means that the Switch 2 will be able to play both physical and digital games from the original Switch.
However, Nintendo cautioned that certain Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible on the successor device.
